What was your career background prior to starting your Refresh Renovations™ business?

I was a business owner in the hospitality industry for 10 years before joining Refresh™.

What attracted you to Refresh™ as a business opportunity?

My strength is managing people and resources.  I felt my skills and experiences from hospitality businesses are transferable, Refresh™ offered me the opportunity to continue doing what I do best.

What is the market opportunity?

Demand in Wellington for project management in the renovation market.

What is the biggest challenge running this type of business?

Lack of knowledge in building, rules and regulations in housing, council / district rules.  Network for resources: suppliers and tradespeople.

What is your best advice to run a great Refresh™ Renovation business?

Hands on, focus on delivery of project management service, protect your margin to justify your service.

Who is the ideal Refresh™ owner?

Business minded people who focus on delivery of services. Pay great attention to details, and have good communication skills.

Why is the Refresh™ model so compelling for customers?

Providing one point of contact. 

What do you think of Refresh™’s marketing, and what are the most effective techniques you’ve used to find new customers?

To promote project management service, not to compete in prices.  Referral is the most effective way to find new customers.

What is it like working with clients?

Mostly good, most clients understand and appreciate the services we provide.  

What were key hires for you as you started building out your team?

Project coordinator / manager.

Any advice for the start-up phase?

Focus on building up your resources: network of trades, suppliers.  This will equip you with what you need to serve the lead / client. 

Any areas for improvement?

Comprehension of system and procedures.
