Franchise Spotlight: Tax

Tax franchises offer prospective franchisees a reputable brand in a sector where integrity is particularly prized.

Taxes are unavoidable for the vast majority of adults and businesses and the complexity of meeting tax obligations makes for enormous as well as recession-proof demand for businesses providing tax preparation and advisory services.

Taxes of various kinds must also be dealt with on an ongoing basis, so trusted advisors benefit from repeat business, as well as decent profit margins given the prices they can charge and their relatively low overheads.

Services are many and varied and include handling corporate tax, tax reporting and strategy, investment management, handling global taxes and so on, as well as various accountancy services.

Tax industry trends

The industry growth rate for the $21bn accountancy and tax services market, which caters principally to affluent individuals as well as Australia’s 2.3 million businesses, is being fuelled in particular by sector-specific advisory services and value-added services enabled by cutting-edge data analytics and cloud-based technologies.

That is according to analysis by market research firm IBISWorld, which nevertheless also noted that Covid-19 was more damaging news for advisory than audit and tax services.

Vying to operate under trusted brands in a market where integrity is paramount, aspiring tax franchisees may need specific industry qualifications or previous experience in senior corporate roles, depending on the franchise in question.

Tax franchises include STP (Success Tax Professionals), which helps businesses, individuals, retirees and investors protect assets and/or improve profitability, and TaxAssist Accountants, which caters to small businesses, the self-employed, and property landlords.

ITP (Income Tax Professionals), which Readers Digest has named the leading tax and accounting brand, says it helps more than 300,000 clients across Australia process their tax returns, among other services.

Topfranchise Awards winner H&R Block, meanwhile, was founded in 1955 and has grown to around 12,000 retail tax offices in the US, Canada and Australia.
