Franchise Spotlight: Car Hire

Expected rises in business confidence and inbound tourist numbers would be good news for the sector.

Although 92.5% of Australian households own a car, the $1bn car, van and truck hire industry still enjoys plenty of demand.

This primarily comes from businesspeople, tourists and car owners whose vehicles are temporarily out of action.

Tourism, in particular, is a major growth engine, with inbound tourist numbers rising from six million in 2011 to 9.4 million in 2019, according to Tourism Australia statistics.

Renewed post-pandemic growth in both tourism numbers and business confidence, which encourages corporate travel, bodes well for the sector.

Market research from IBISWorld forecasts that the car hire industry growth rate will turn positive despite downward price pressure from car rental aggregator websites and competition from car sharing websites.

Franchise industry analysis

An automotive background is generally seen as advantageous for aspiring franchisees but far from essential.

Some car hire franchise buyers rebrand their independent car rental business to benefit from the franchisor’s support, resources and marketing clout.

Start-up costs are high compared to many franchise sectors, but franchisees often go onto generate substantial incomes from multiple units.

With more than 220 car hire locations, Hertz is Australia’s biggest, most globally recognized car hire franchise.

Redspot Car Rentals hires out 2,500 vehicles from 16 airport and four city locations, while Australian-owned Network Car Hire and Truck Rentals also generates revenues from airport valet, one-way rental and repairer’s pick-up services.

As the names suggest, Thrifty and Budget Australia operate in the ‘value’ segment, with 180-plus and 240-plus Australian locations respectively.

Offering something different, Green Motion’s eco-friendly ethos has seen it expand to 47 countries, while Towncars Networks Australia provides executive chauffeur services and a lower capital investment than many car rental franchises.

Finally, RAD Rentals franchisees can manage their car rental business from an internet-enabled device, and Right Cars says franchisees get access to the latest vehicle models at competitive prices.
